A demonstration against the roll-out of the next generation internet, known as 5th generation or 5G, has been held in Rome's iconic People's Square.

The protest - called by the Stop 5G Italian Alliance - aimed to raise concerns over the possible health risks of the increased radiation 5G will bring.

The new 5G promises internet speeds 100 times faster than the current best connection on 4G. However in order to accomplish that, a large number of new phone masts must be installed and protest groups see a real medical danger in this proliferation of sources of radiation.

Italy is working to fully benefit the potential of 5G by involving China's Huawei and ZTE Corporation, a partnership which the US administration sees unfavorably [sic]. Medics and academics at the demonstration said the Italian health authorities have been informed over the risks linked to the adoption of such technology and were calling on the government to drop its 5G ambitions.

According to the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection also known as ICNIRP, there are no established health risks linked to mobile devices or 5G antennas.

Italy is working to fully benefit the potential of 5G by involving China's telecoms firms Huawei and ZTE Corporation. However, this partnership is seen unfavorably [sic] by the US administration.
