Former personal attorney to Donald Trump explains the US president's obsession with former President Barack Obama.
In an interview with MSNBC, Cohen, who was convicted of campaign finance violations in 2018, continued antagonism against his former boss.
“His hatred for Barack Obama is plain and simple: he’s Black, he went to Harvard Law, he graduated at the top of his class, he’s incredibly articulate, he’s all the things that Donald Trump wants to be,” Cohen said. “And he just can’t handle it. So what do you do if you’re Donald Trump and you can’t handle it? You attack it.”
Cohen has said in his book, released Tuesday, that Trump never really though that Obama was born in Kenya but promoted the conspiracy theory because he was seeking to “would arouse strong feelings for those who took his side.”
Trump also privately used racial slurs against Obama as well as South Africa's late Nelson Mandela.
The book also alleges that unless Vice President Mike Pence becomes president and pardons him, he would likely be in legal trouble, Trump’s former lawyer said, advising him to resign.
Cohen was sentenced to three years behind bars and ordered to pay a $50,000 fine.
He made payments during the 2016 campaign to two women – adult film actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal – to silence them from speaking publicly about affairs they had with Trump.
