Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden emerged from his national convention with a 1 percentage point lead in Texas over Republican President Donald Trump, a poll scheduled for wide release on Tuesday shows.

The results from the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, obtained Monday by the USA TODAY Network, shows Biden's small lead coming from his strength among female and minority voters, plus those with four years of college or more.

Overall, among the 764 registered voters contacted randomly on Friday and Saturday after last week's Democratic National Convention, 48% said they plan to vote for Biden while 47% are for Trump. Four years ago, Trump carried Texas by 9 percentage points to keep alive the GOP's winning streak in Texas that began in 1980.

But the new poll, which carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points, also shows that 7% of Trump's voters in 2016 have moved to the Biden camp while only 3% of those who backed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton four years ago have migrated to Trump.

Biden and the Democrats received mostly favorable reviews from their convention, held virtually for the first time ever because of the coronavirus pandemic. The spotlight moves to Trump and the Republicans starting Monday in what the party is calling a hybrid convention, meaning some events will be held in the host city of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Texas Democrats for the entire 2020 election cycle so far have striven to drive a narrative that the state is within their grasp for first time since the Reagan era.

The Public Policy group's poll tracks numerous others in recent weeks showing a close race in Texas, though many of them show Trump with a small lead. Nearly all of the polling, however, shows the president struggling to overcome underwater approval ratings in Texas.

Public Policy Polling shows that 52% of all respondents disapprove of the president's job performance while 46% said they approve. Trump performs strongest in Texas among his fellow Republicans with an 88% approval rating. On the Democratic side, 89% said they disapprove.

Among independents, nearly two-thirds gave the president low marks.

White Texans, by a 67-32% margin, said the approve of the Trump's performance and 68% of whites said they plan to vote for him in the Nov. 3 election.

Only 16% of Hispanic voters said they approved of the president's job performance but 20 percent said they would vote to re-elect the president. The gaps were wider among Black Texans: only 5% said they approved and only 4% said they're voting for Trump.

The poll also shows a narrow male-female divide in Texas. Men, by a 50-48% margin, said they approved of Trump's on-the-job performance and by a 50-45% margin said they plan to vote for his re-election.

A majority of Texas women, 53%, disapprove of Trump but 45% do. When it comes to how they'll vote, 50% of women said Biden to 45% for Trump.
