Venezuela's repatriation proposal remains unanswered by US

Caracas is demanding the repatriation of Venezuelan and American citizens to their own respective home countries.

Although hundreds of Venezuelan and American citizens have been unable to return to their respective countries, the United States has not yet accepted Venezuela’s call for evacuation of the people stuck far from their homes.

The government of Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro, has gone so far as to offer Venezuelan airplanes to carry out the humanitarian mission while pledging to fully observe health protocols.

Venezuelan officials have warned that political conflicts between the two sides must not impede attempts for repatriation of the citizens, especially as the world is dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. The Venezuelan opposition, however, has defended the Trump administration’s stance on the issue.

Experts also say tensions between the United States and Venezuela do not justify suspending the repatriation process indefinitely.

Repatriation serves as a humanitarian measure which the U-S currently underestimates due to its hostile policy against Venezuela. In response, Caracas says it will take legal actions to rescue the citizens who request to be repatriated.
