US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden says President Donald Trump is telling "bald-faced lies" about voting by mail to distract from his own failures, noting that Trump would do everything in his power to "argue this election is fraudulent."
Trump suggested he could sign an executive order about the mail-in voting in the 2020 presidential race, arguing he has the authority to do so while reiterating his allegations about election fraud.
The US president has repeatedly denounced the practice as several states look to expand mail-in ballots for the November election amid concerns about the coronavirus.
“I have the right to do it,” Trump said, arguing that a mailed-in election would be a “great embarrassment to our country,” but noted, “We haven’t gotten there yet, we’ll see what happens.
Trump has claimed increased mail voting would be rife with fraud, remarks that have deepened Democrats' fears that he will refuse to accept the election outcome should he lose, Reuters said.
An American president has never moved to curtail or limit mail-in voting in elections.
Trump suggested the November 3 election could be postponed, an idea immediately rejected by Democrats and his fellow Republicans in Congress.
Biden said on Monday, "He (Trump) suggested we should postpone the election, full of just bald-faced lies about how mail-in votes were fraud, and how it was so terrible."
"Well look, he's calling out any effort to exploit this pandemic for political purposes. It distracts from his complete failure," Biden said.
Trump, who trails the presumptive Democratic nominee in opinion polls due to his mishandling of COVID-19 crisis in the US, tweeted on Thursday that he would not trust the results of an election that included widespread mail voting – a measure many observers see as critical during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The US president threatened to sue the Nevada state government after lawmakers there approved a measure over the weekend to send mail-in ballots to all voters.
On Monday, Trump called the move an “illegal late night coup,” saying it “made it impossible for Republicans to win the state” and rounding out the post with “see you in court!”
The United States is enduring a coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 155,000 people – the most in the world.
Trump is in a tight spot as the United States is also contending with crippling recession sparked by COVID-19 outbreak and nationwide protests against police violence and racism.
