In Prague, thousands put protection away, feast ‘farewell’ to coronavirus

Around 2,000 people participated in a symbolic ‘farewell’ to coronavirus on the iconic Charles Bridge in Prague on Tuesday, on the eve of the further easing of restrictions in the Czech Republic.

People were filmed in close proximity, with little or no protection, eating and drinking on a table stretching 515-metres (1,689 feet) from one side to the other of the Vltava river.

Ondrej Kobza, the organizer, said, “I saw the empty Charles Bridge, no tourists, and I had an idea that maybe we could organize some long table, 500-metre long table for people. And the rule is that everybody have bring something — some cake, or chicken, or wine, or flower(s).”

The event comes as the World Health Organisation warns that the COVID-19 pandemic is far from being over, and that 'the worst is yet to come.'

The Czech Republic has reported over 11,000 cases of coronavirus, according to data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University. A total of 349 people are said to have died with the virus.
