Defying quarantine restrictions in Buenos Aires, Argentines marched on the capital on Thursday to demand greater financial help from the government of President Alberto Fernandez as the economy buckles under pandemic.

Different civil society groups converged on the capital, arguing existing social programs to stave off economic ruin are insufficient for making ends meet amid coronavirus.

Demonstrators gathered at the iconic Obelisk in Buenos Aires and marched with face masks to the Social Development Ministry. They are calling for greater economic aid for citizens living in extreme poverty and more support for soup kitchens in the capital's most deprived areas

In recent years, Argentina has been mired in deep social and economic crisis. At the end of 2019 officials estimated poverty to affect 35.5% of the population.
