Venezuelans have decried the re-election of Luis Almagro as secretary-general of the Organization of American States, also known as OAS.
Caracas says Almagro has been backing the US’s regime change policy against Venezuela and other countries of the Americas whose governments Washington does not approve of. But the opposition praises Almagro’s re-election.
Pro-government officials say Almagro fuels the region's political instability. Meanwhile, some experts believe Almagro’s re-election will worsen diplomatic conflicts.
The 54th Special General Assembly of the Organization of American States re-elected Luis Almagro as secretary-general on Friday.
Almagro, from Uruguay, was re-elected with 23 of the 33 votes cast by member states. Candidate María Fernanda Espinosa, from Ecuador, obtained 10 votes and one country was absent.
Almagro will be in office for five years starting May 26, 2020. The assembly was held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.
Venezuela has denounced the OAS’s actions, saying it serves as a political tool of the US government in the Americas. Caracas is determined to legally confront the OAS meddling in the region.
