Russia will use every possible means to help safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.

That’s according to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who met his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Muallem in Moscow on Monday.

Lavrov pointed out that in any case, with or without UN Security Council resolutions, Russia is working to ensure and restore the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.

He also stressed the need for a political solution to the Syrian crisis and hailed the launch of the Syrian constitutional committee in Geneva despite attempts to obstruct its work.

Meanwhile, the Syrian foreign minister accused the US, Turkey and Israel of hindering the country’s fight against terrorism.

He said amid a continued Turkish aggression, the US was plundering the country’s oil and attacking its petroleum facilities while Israel carried out airstrikes in Syria.

Muallem’s visit coincided with a visit by a Turkish delegation to Moscow. Some say the visits could be linked. Russia and Turkey reached a deal in Sochi in October to establish a safe zone in northern Syria, removing Kurdish militants operating in the region to beyond 30 kilometers from the Turkish border.

Economic cooperation between Russia and Syria was also discussed during the meeting on Monday.

Damascus says it gives priority to Russian companies in the reconstruction process due to Russia’s support for Syria in fighting terrorism.

Meanwhile, the Russian government intends to allocate 100 thousand tons of grain as humanitarian aid to Syria, deliveries will begin until the end of December and will continue through the second quarter of 2020.
