Scaramucci: Bloomberg could beat Trump if he wins Democratic nomination

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci has said that former New York City Mayor and multibillionaire Michael Bloomberg could defeat incumbent US President Donald Trump in 2020 if he is able to secure the Democratic nomination.

“If Mayor Bloomberg, if Mike were to get the nomination, he would beat the president,” Scaramucci said on Tuesday while attending the SALT leadership conference in Abu Dhabi.

Scaramucci said “Trump fatigue”' could help Bloomberg beat the Republican president.

“Those 15 percent to 18 percent of the people, I think they are exhausted. I think they have a level of Trump fatigue,” he said.

Scaramucci praised Bloomberg as a strong candidate who he said will be able to separate himself from the crowded Democratic field.

“He’s a very sound guy and a very good business manager, and he’s been a very capable politician, so for those reasons, I think he’ll give him a big run. I think he’ll beat him,” he said.

Scaramucci criticized Trump saying he has diminished some of his accomplishments by slamming his adversaries.

“Unfortunately, the president is often stepping on his message. He uses Twitter to ridicule people and to personally attack them, and I think it’s affected his standing and the public approval ratings, not just in the US but around the world,” he said.

Scaramucci said Trump “has damaged his image. I don’t think America’s image, frankly, has been damaged yet by President Trump, but his image has been damaged. If you see the interaction at NATO or the G-7 over the summer, I think his image has been damaged.”

Bloomberg made a late entry to the Democratic primary field and has since then invested tens of millions of dollars in television ads. The billionaire said he would not accept outside donations and is self-funding his campaign.

An analyst says the fact that Donald Trump is “denigrating” former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg is the president’s modus operandi.

Bloomberg said last week that Trump would beat any of his Democratic rivals in the 2020 election easily, claiming, "Donald Trump would eat 'em up."

The 77-year-old slammed his Democratic White House rivals saying they “had a chance to go out and make a lot of money” themselves, and then use it to fund their campaigns.

Bloomberg has been privately criticizing his rivals but this was the first time he had been so outspoken publicly.

Bloomberg is concerned that liberal candidates such as US Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, and their proposed expensive expansion of government programs, will alienate Democratic voters in battleground states.

Sanders has said that billionaires are trying to “buy” the US election.

And, Warren has accused Bloomberg of trying to buy the presidency following his self-funded campaign’s unprecedented spending on ads.
