Behind Lebanon’s protests

Since mid-October, Lebanon has been rocked by ostensibly popular protests.

The Western media and specialist publications have tried their hardest to depict these protests as cross-sectarian and representative of a supposedly United National will to overthrow Lebanon’s allegedly corrupt and inefficient political system.

As for the protests, there are some immediate questions like: What is their true nature? To what extent do these protests reflect popular grievances? And most important of all, to what extent are foreign powers, in particular Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, coordinating and exploiting the protests? And finally, what do these foreign powers hope to achieve from stoking instability in Lebanon?
