The UN-backed peace talks on Syria are now underway in the Swiss city of Geneva, as the representatives from the Syrian government and Western-backed opposition came together for the first time since the start of the bloody conflict in 2011.
The UN Special envoy to Syria applauded the sides willingness to begin direct talks.
However, just a day earlier, both Iran and Russia, who also support the Syrian only talks, warned that further progress will not be easy to achieve.
As discussion now get underway, fighting still rages on inside Syria. With the Syrian Army still aiming to liberate all remaining territory, some occupied by Turkish-backed takfiri groups.
And back in Geneva, just outside the UN headquarters, another group, not represented at these talks, protested - the Kurds demonstrated as anger grows over the Turkish military offensive in northern Syria.
A lot is riding on these talks but with so much bloodshed in the Syrian conflict, many believe that talking around a UN table is unlikely to bear much fruit in a short space of time but hope does still exist.
