Austria’s conservative People’s Party led by former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has won snap polls but the votes were not enough for a single party government.

A coalition with the runners up, the Social Democrats is unlikely since the two parties differ on many issues including Kurz’s tough migration policies.

Another coalition with the far-right Freedom Party is also controversial since the party’s involvement in a corruption scandal was the reason why the previous coalition collapsed and Kurz faced a no-confidence vote.

Supporters of more moderate parties like the Greens and the liberals are still concerned about the right-wing’s return to power.

The Greens, coming up fourth, have secured the most votes over the past 3 decades due to concerns for the environment.

Green Party candidate Werner Kogler has called for more funding in the environmental sector.

Most analysts believe the election will be followed by a long period of coalition talks with predictions that the current caretaker government could remain in place until December or later.
