A high-ranking official from the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement has vowed that if Israel continues to kill Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, his movement will take action to force the regime to end its violations of the truce understandings over the coastal enclave.
Khalil al-Hayya, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, made the warning on Sunday, stressing that the resistance movement was able to compel Tel Aviv at the right time to respect the mediated ceasefire understandings reached over the Gaza Strip.
In press remarks, carried by the Palestinian Information Center, the Hamas official also urged the mediators of the truce — the United Nations, Egypt, and Qatar — to intervene to curb Israel’s aggressive practices against the blockaded sliver.
Hayya said there were ongoing contacts with the mediators regarding the matter.
Back in May, Israeli airstrikes killed four Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Israeli warplanes later struck some 350 sites in Gaza, claiming the lives of 27 Palestinian people. In response, Hamas fired some 700 rockets at the occupied lands, killing four Israelis and wounding 200 others.
After three days of deadly Israeli airstrikes and retaliatory Palestinian rocket attacks, the two sides reached a ceasefire agreement with mediation by Egypt and Qatar.
However, the Israeli regime regularly violates the ceasefire by launching ground and aerial attacks against the inhabitants of Gaza.
Israeli regime forces have also been using live fire against Palestinian protesters along the fence separating the coastal sliver from the occupied territories. At least 307 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces ever since regular protests began in the Gaza Strip on March 30, 2018. Over 18,000 Palestinians have also sustained injuries.
Hayya said the protests would continue. He also added that the Israeli targeting of peaceful protesters in the besieged enclave would encourage Gazans to take part in the rallies more actively.
The Gaza Strip has been under Israeli siege since June 2007.
Israel has also launched three major wars against the enclave since 2008, killing thousands of Gazans each time and shattering the impoverished territory’s already poor infrastructure.
