The Australian, who won the Citi Open on July, was the stronger player in the opening set, grabbing it 7-6.
It was a close contest in the second set, where the world number nine regrouped and managed to finish it 7-6 in his favor.
The Russian kept the momentum and smoothly wrapped up the match 6-3 in the final set. He will next face Lucas Pouille of France.
