On Saturday, Saudi security forces gunned down at least eight people during an operation in Al-Qatif, a region in the east of the kingdom, where the predominantly Shia Muslims have been marginalized for years.
The attack is part of the massive crackdown led by Riyadh against pro-democracy campaigners and activists.
The Al-Qatif region has been the scene of peaceful demonstrations since 2011. Protesters have been demanding reforms, freedom of expression, and an end to economic and religious discrimination against their oil-rich region.
