Sheikh Zakzaky’s case adjourned as Nigeria flouts law

Nigerian Muslim cleric Ibrahim Zakzaky

Another blow for the supporters of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky as the latest court hearing has been postponed indefinitely.

It has been over 3 years since Sheikh Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has been in the custody of Nigeria’s Department of State Services along with his wife. Both are accused of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, and disruption of public peace.

There is a clear lack of co-operation from the Nigerian authorities. Since their detention, Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife have suffered from deteriorating health conditions but have not had access to medical care. They are also held in violation of a 2016 supreme court order demanding their release.

Sheikh Zakzaky’s supporters and the IMN continue to hold regular peaceful protests demanding the release of their leader. But this seems to be falling on deaf ears.
