Thousands of anti-coal protesters march through Cologne

Thousands of protesters have marched through the streets of the western German city of Cologne to call for an end to coal mining and its usage in energy production.

Some demonstrators came dressed in elaborate tree costumes, while others brought signs and banners calling for an immediate phasing out of coal and for the increased usage of renewable energy.

Protests against the clearing of the ancient Hambach forest, which lies just 45 km (28 miles) west of the city, to allow for the expansion of a lignite or brown coal mining operation by German energy company RWE, have helped propel the issue of coal to the forefront of the political debate in Germany this year.
