Trump morphing into a Mussolini-style autocrat: Analyst

Following the US midterm congressional elections, President Donald Trump is morphing into a Mussolini-style autocrat is becoming fixed, according to Myles Hoenig.

The American political analyst and activist said that Trump’s “bluster, megalomania, and racism has come fully to the fore and we’re in very difficult and frightening times heading into the new Congress.”

Hoenig, a former Green Party candidate for Congress, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Thursday after Americans voted in the 2018 midterm elections that marked the first major voter test of Trump's presidency.

Trump on Wednesday hailed "tremendous success" in the mid-term elections despite losing the House of Representatives to the Democrats in the November 6 vote. The Republicans, however, consolidated their grip on the Senate.

The US president thinks keeping the Senate with a bigger majority than before is enough to announce him and the Republican Party as the winners of the 2018 congressional midterms.

“The Democrats re-took the House and the Republicans remain in control of the Senate. But what difference will it make and if so, when? So much can happen in a short time before the Democrats can react. Are we in a situation in which Vladimir Lenin said of the Russian Revolution, ‘There are decades where nothing happens and there are weeks where decades happen.’ There is virtually nothing the Democrats can do until later in January of 2019 when the Republicans hand over the gavel to their opposition,” Hoenig said.

“Already President Trump has fired the Attorney General, giving himself far more power to control the outcome and progress of the Mueller investigation. He has also relieved a CNN reporter of his standing with the White House press corps for asking embarrassing questions at a very rare press conference,” he stated.  

“That he is acting more like a Mussolini is becoming obvious. His bluster, megalomania, and racism has come fully to the fore and we’re in very difficult and frightening times heading into the new Congress,” he noted.

“Wednesday’s revival of Nixon’s Saturday Night Massacre comes at a time of a lame duck Congress. The question is how will this country survive the next several weeks before the new Congress convenes? If it does, as it is likely to, there will be enormous tensions between not just the House and the President, but even within the House as Democrats who are not united in how to deal with this derelict president. Some call for impeachment but the likely Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, has long opposed such an action against criminal presidents, including President Bush,” the activist said.

“In addition to the turmoil we’ll be experiencing between the two branches of government, there is also the concern of the refugees coming towards the United States from Mexico. How President Trump will deal with that will bring new horrors to our American psyche. Would a divided government be exactly what Trump wants in order to carry out his own agenda? Certainly, despots, dictators, and authoritarians thrive on the lack of a cohesive opposition,” he concluded.
