Hundreds of women have brought traffic to a halt outside Madrid's city hall in a demonstration marking Spain's first national women's strike organized to coincide with International Women's Day.

Carrying purple flags emblazoned with the acronym of Spain's two main labor unions, the women chanted and sang slogans, called for equality and denounced domestic violence as cars came to a halt.
