The new round of indictments in US Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation show “incontrovertible” evidence that Russia interfered in the US 2016 presidential election, the White House national security adviser has said.
H.R. McMaster made the remarks while speaking at the 54th Munich Security Conference in Munich, Germany on Saturday, a day after President Donald Trump denied that his campaign colluded with Russia.
Trump’s denial came hours after thirteen Russians and three Russian companies were charged with conspiracy to interfere with the 2016 US presidential election.
On Friday, Mueller, who is investigating the alleged Russian meddling, indicted 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities accused of interfering in elections in the United States.
McMaster said “with the FBI indictment, the evidence is now incontrovertible” that Russia meddled in the election.
McMaster spoke at the conference immediately after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who described the new Mueller indictments as “just blabber.”
“So as long as we don’t see facts, everything else is blabber,” said the top Russian diplomat during his speech at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday.
An investigation has been launched to find out whether the Russian government coordinated with Trump’s aides after the US intelligence community’s conclusion that the Kremlin helped with the Trump’s campaign effort ahead of winning the White House.
Sources familiar with Mueller’s investigation said he has used his broad authority to investigate links between Trump associates and foreign governments, as well as to determine whether the president or any of his aides tried to obstruct justice.
Trump has repeatedly denied allegations that his campaign colluded with Russians and has condemned the investigations. Russia has also denied the allegations.
Trump has also labeled Mueller’s investigation as a “witch hunt.”
In a tweet following the release of the indictments, Trump said the indictment showed his campaign “did nothing wrong” and that there was “no collusion” with Russia.
Russia started their anti-US campaign in 2014, long before I announced that I would run for President. The results of the election were not impacted. The Trump campaign did nothing wrong - no collusion!
