British Prime Minister Theresa May has announced that she wants to reconvene talks with the European Union (EU) over United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the bloc.

Addressing senior ministers on Tuesday, May said the Brexit negotiations are expected to restart later this week.

She added that the UK and the EU are very close to an agreement with “only a small number of issues outstanding.”

"The PM said intensive work had been taking place in recent weeks and the UK and European Commission were very close to getting agreement with only a small number of issues outstanding," May’s spokesman said.

British government's head of the talks David Davis has also reported progress in talks with Brussels.

"We recognise as we exit the EU we must respect the integrity of the single market and the customs union. But we are equally clear we must respect the integrity of the United Kingdom," he said on Tuesday.

He too said that there were ongoing talks and expected further meetings to take place later this week. He said he wanted to "rebut one falsehood stirred up by our political opponents."

"The suggestion we might leave the EU but leave one part of the United Kingdom behind still in the single market and customs market that is emphatically not something the UK government is considering," Davis added.

The recent developments come only a day after EU leaders said they have failed to reach an agreement on the terms of the UK’s divorce after meeting with Britain.

The so-called EU divorce bill, or Brexit financial settlement, is the sum of money demanded by the EU from the UK as it leaves the bloc.

Britain and the EU have agreed on a divorce bill that is likely to be between $54 billion to $67 billion.

The bloc says if sufficient progress is not made, it won’t be possible to move to the next phase of separation talks.
