A major blast has rocked the city of Jalalabad in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar Province, leaving at least six civilians dead and thirteen others injured.
The Afghan Tolo News television channel said an assailant on Sunday detonated an explosive-laden motorbike near the Shirzai Stadium, where a gathering was being held in support of the country’s National Unity Government.
Attahullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the provincial governor, also confirmed the blast, saying, “The victims have been taken the nearby hospital and the governor has ordered urgent assistance to the victims.”
A woman and a child were among the fatalities, according to reports.
No group or individual has so far claimed responsibility for the deadly incident.
The Sunday blast in Jalalabad came a day after the Takfiri Daesh terrorists killed at least two members of Afghan security forces and inflicted injuries on nearly a dozen other people, including civilians, in an ambush carried out in the same city.
The United States and its NATO allies invaded Afghanistan as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror in 2001. The US-led invasion toppled a Taliban regime, which then started a militancy.
Afghanistan is still rife with violence despite the presence of foreign troops across the country.
The Takfiri Daesh terrorist group has gained a foothold in the country more recently.
