People in the Syrian city of Dayr al-Zawr celebrate as the army, allies break the nearly three-year Daesh siege on the city. Government forces, backed by popular defense groups, entered Dayr al-Zawr and reached the Brigade 137 base on the western outskirts of the city.
The army launched a multi-pronged operation to recapture the city. Nearly 100,000 civilians and military forces have been under Daesh’s siege since January 2015.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates that more than 10,000 people may live in the Daesh-held parts of Dayr al-Zawr.
