Jordanian border guards have killed five people trying to cross into Jordan from a town on the other side of the border in Syria.

The army said on Sunday that the five were on board a pick-up truck and two motorcycles driving toward Jordan’s border from the town of At-Tanaf Syria. It said in a statement that border guards opened fire on the suspects, killing five people and destroying their vehicles. It added that the incident happened in the past 72 hours,

The statement said that initially nine cars had approached the Jordanian border from at-Tanaf, a town where US forces and militants loyal to them are based. The army said in a separate incident, two other people had been arrested while trying to illegally cross the border.

Officials did not elaborate on the identities of those arrested and other details.

Jordan is part of an international coalition that allegedly fights Daesh Takfiri group in Iraq and Syria. The country has justified its presence in the alliance, which operates under the leadership of the United States, as a way to block the spillover of the militancy from the two Arab countries which share long borders with Jordan.

Jordan said following attacks in June last year which killed seven soldiers that desert regions that stretch northeast to Syria and east to Iraq are "closed military zones". Daesh claimed the attack which took place in a no-man's land near the Rukban crossing.

Jordanian army said on June 3 that they had killed gunmen riding motorcycles who tried to overrun border position at Rukban. It said the gunmen, who were planning attacks on border guards, were riding motorcycles and belonged to "terrorist groups and coming from Syria."
