Lebanon elects new president
Lebanon's Army Chief Joseph Aoun wins the two-thirds majority to become president of the crises-ridden country in the second round of a parliamentary vote. Legislators chose Joseph Aoun after two rounds of voting in the 128-member parliament. Aoun had failed to garner the majority in the first round. A dozen previous attempts all failed due to lack of consensus to win a two-thirds majority. Aoun’s election put an end to a two-year-long political deadlock in the crises-hit Arab country. Lebanon was without a president since Michel Aoun's term ended in October 2022. Under multi-confessional Lebanon's power-sharing system, the president must be a Maronite Christian. After the election, Aoun addressed the Lebanese Parliament and vowed to prevent Israeli aggressions and rebuild what the regime has destroyed in the Arab country.
