US claims of Russian involvement in Syrian attack fallacious: Analyst

Political commentator Daniel Patrick Welch

America's claims that Russians had been aware of the recent alleged chemical attack in northwestern Syria earlier this month is simply untrue, an American political analyst says.

Daniel Patrick Welch, a political commentator, told Press TV on Tuesday, "There seems to be no instance in which the officials of empire will not double down on their own rashness and stupidity."

According to a senior US official, a Russian surveillance drone was flying over a hospital where victims of the April 4 attack were being brought for treatment.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press on Monday that after the drone left the place a Russian-manufactured fighter aircraft bombed the hospital in an attempt to cover up the usage of controversial weaponry.

The United States has no proof of Russian involvement in the actual chemical attack that left more than 80 people dead and dozens others injured in the town of Khan Shaykhun in Idlib province, the official acknowledged.

Welch said, “Everything in my bones militates against believing that Assad or the Russians would do this at this time—it just doesn’t make sense."

"And when you add to that the horrific string of false flags and exaggerated stories that are used by the west as a pretext for launching preemptive war. From Venezuela to Honduras to… everywhere!" he said.

"The Gulf of Tonkin, obviously, the street protests against Mossadegh, the Russian element helping Najibullah in Afghanistan, the incubator babies in the first [Persian] Gulf War, the fake vial and the vile lies that came with Colin Powell’s speech before the UN, the 2013 Ghouta chemical attack, which they had to back off on because the evidence proved them wrong," he said.

"On US relations with Russia and Washington’s negotiations, he said, “The the US does not want to negotiate—they never have, and they never will. Look at Rex Tillerson, gets invited to Moscow, and what does he say?" he stated.

“The Russians have to change everything they believe and think! In other words, they have to become a puppet of the US for any relationship to continue. They have to not ally with Assad, they have to not ally with Hezbollah, they have to not ally with Iran. In other words they have to give up. What we  [Americans] expect and demand is complete surrender, and we consider that to be 'partnership,'" he added.

"And the Russians are not stupid—they’re not perfect, obviously. It’s a capitalist state with a lot of oligarchic control. And they are using a lot of propaganda that is very ugly in the West in terms of immigrants and stuff like that. But it’s not the time to focus on that exclusively," he said.

Three days after the alleged chemical attack, two US Navy destroyers fired 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles from the Mediterranean Sea at Syria’s al-Shayrat airfield, killing several people and reportedly destroying a number of Syrian aircraft.
