Ghana’s new president and a new optimism

Third time truly was a charm for Ghana’s new president, Nana Akufo-Addo, who finally became the west African country's president after two previous failed attempts.

Swept into office on the promise of significant economic transformation, Mr. Akufu-Addo has pledged 'not to let his country down' but must be aware of the mammoth task ahead. With widespread reforms needed, Ghana's new leader also has to stick with an austerity agenda that was part of an IMF bailout deal back in 2015. Can the new man get Ghana moving again?

Ghana now has to show Africa — and the rest of the world — that it is able to rectify an economic situation that is threatening to undermine the country's political stability. Former president John Dramani Mahama has urged nationwide support for the man who defeated him at the polls, but will Akufo-Addo's plans of cutting taxes and opening new businesses see him — or the country's economy — fare better?
