Iran’s Gachsaran Oil and Gas handball club is to play a third-place play-off against Qatari team Lekhwiya in the 19th edition of the Asian Men’s Club League Championship in Jordan following a defeat at the semi-final stage of the continental event.
On Thursday, the Iranian team lost 26-35 to al-Noor of Saudi Arabia in a fairly competitive and spirited match played in the Jordanian capital city of Amman.
Even though the Gachsaran Oil and Gas handball players started the game off in a satisfactory fashion and delivered a convincing performance, they lost the first half 15-19 to their Saudi rivals.
The Iranian sportsmen recovered shortly after the interval, and managed to reduce the deficit to only two points. However, they could not sustain the momentum and let the Saudis draw on their experience and notch up points to move ahead. Al-Noor players eventually rolled past their Iranian opponents by nine points.
In another semi-final match of the day, El Jaish from Qatar beat compatriot Lekhwiya 28-20 to win the ticket for the final match.
Iran’s Gachsaran Oil and Gas handball club will face Lekhwiya in the bronze medal contest on Saturday.
The 19th edition of Asian Men’s Club League Championship kicked off in Amman, Jordan, on October 29 and will wrap up on November 5, 2016.
