Iran fails to overcome Iraq in Asia handball championship

The national Iranian men’s junior handball team has lost to Iraq at the 15th edition of the Asian Men’s Junior Handball Championship in Jordan.

The Iranians experienced a narrow defeat at the second round of the competition on Tuesday evening. The score was 29-34 at the end of the match that was played in the Jordanian capital Amman.

Young Iraqi handball players established a 17-11 lead at the end of the first half.

In addition to Iraq, the Islamic Republic is to be pitted against Japan and South Korea in the second stage. Iran will take on South Korea on Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, the hosts are slated to meet Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Only two teams from each group will book the ticket for the semi-finals.

Earlier in the preliminary round, Iran achieved two resounding victories, breezing past Jordan, with the score of 41-17, and Uzbekistan, with the score of 37-22.

The 15th edition of the Asian Men’s Junior Handball Championship kicked off in Amman on July 22 and will conclude on August 1. It serves as the qualification tournament for the 2017 International Handball Federation (IHF) Men’s Junior World Championship, which will be held in Algeria.
