Trump is ‘national disaster’: De Niro agrees with Colin Powell

American actor Robert De Niro

Hollywood actor Robert De Niro has criticized Americans for putting an “idiot” like Donald Trump in a position where he might become the US president, and agreed with former secretary of state Colin Powell who called Trump a “national disaster.”

De Niro had been enlisted along with several other actors to speak in a non-partisan video encouraging Americans to vote in the November presidential election. But the 73-year-old actor defied script and delivered a scathing rebuke of Trump, the Republican presidential nominee.

“He's so blatantly stupid. He's a punk, he's a dog, he's a pig [...] a mutt who [...] doesn't do his homework, doesn't care. He's an idiot. Colin Powell said it best: He's a national disaster. He's an embarrassment to this country,” the Raging Bull actor said in a video surfaced on Friday.

“It makes me so angry that this country has gotten to this point that this fool, this bozo, has wound up where he has,” he stated.

“He talks how he wants to punch people in the face? Well, I'd like to punch him in the face. This is somebody that we want for president? I don't think so. What I care about is the direction of this country, and what I'm very, very worried about is that it might go in the wrong direction with someone like Donald Trump. If you care about your future, vote for it,” De Niro continued.

Recently leaked emails from Powell, who was the US secretary of state from 2001 to 2005, show him strongly condemning Trump.

In his emails, the retired four-star general referred to Trump as “racist,” and a “national disgrace,” among other things.

"Trump is a national disgrace and an international pariah," Powell wrote in June.

"He appeals to the worst angels of the GOP nature and poor white folks," he wrote in another email.

Trump has previously come under attack over his disparaging comments about women, immigrants and Muslims.

The billionaire has called for all Muslims to be banned from entering the US. He also advocated forced deportation of Mexican migrants by building a long wall along the US-Mexico border.

Earlier on Friday, a number of senior Republicans disavowed GOP Trump for a video showing Trump engaged in a lewd conversation about groping and seducing women.

The recording, released on Friday by The Washington Post, has forced Trump to apologize as Republicans warn about the demise of his presidential race.

The embarrassing audio was recorded in 2005 while Trump was on a bus with former "Access Hollywood" host Billy Bush.

The business mogul can be heard talking about his failed attempt to seduce a “married” woman. "I moved on her and I failed. I'll admit it. She was married. And I moved on her very heavily."

Trump apologized for the lewd and sexually aggressive remarks he made a decade ago. He posted a defiant 90-second video just after midnight on social media, saying he is not a "perfect person" and the comments "don't reflect who I am."

Earlier this week, Trump said many of his past remarks against women were made “for the purpose of entertainment.”
