Iran defeats North Korea on penalties to reach U-16 final

Iran advanced into AFC Under-16 Championship after beating North Korea 6-5 in penalty shootout.

Iran have booked their spot in the final of the AFC Under-16 Championship after beating defending champions North Korea.

Iranians dominated the match from the outset and deservedly took the lead in the 19th minute when Mohammad Sharifi fired home through an indirect free kick from inside the box.

The Persians were in control throughout the match and created several opportunities but couldn’t apply the final touch.

12 minutes before the final whistle, the Koreans were rewarded a controversial penalty as Kye tam made no mistake in converting from the spot to equalize everything.

With both teams deadlocked at 1-1 after regulation time, the match had to be decided on penalties where Iran’s keeper Ali Gholamzadeh came to the rescue of his side to prevail over North Korea 6-5. In the other semi-final showdown Iraq beat Japan 4-2 to lock horn with the Iranians in the final.
