Iranian wrestlers snatch three medals in World Cadet Championship

Iranian wrestlers have featured acceptable displays of strength and prowess at the Cadet Wrestling World Championships in Georgia, and collected three medals, including one gold.

On Tuesday and the opening day of the international sporting event at Tbilisi Sports Palace, Iran’s Yousef Hosseinvand downed his Russian opponent and European silver medalist Sergey Stepanov 10-4 in the final encounter of the Greco-Roman 63-kilogram weight category, and clinched the gold medal.

Ismail Gun of Turkey defeated Moldovan contender Anatolie Popov 10-4, and Armenia’s Hrachya Poghosyan prevailed over Ryoma Anraku, a representative from Japan, 5-3 in the third-place bouts of the same weight division, and settled for the bronze medals.

In the Greco-Roman 58-kilogram class, Mohammad Reza Mokhtari lost to his Moldovan rival Valentin Petic 5-1 and picked up a silver medal for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Kyrgyzstan’s Erbol Bakirov and Russian contestant Abdulvakhab Asainovalso won a bronze medal each in this weight section.

Additionally, Vahid Dadkhah was downed by Gerard Kurniczak from Poland 1-2 in the Greco-Roman 100-kilogram weight category to snatch a silver medal for Iran.

The Cadet Wrestling World Championships got under way in the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi on September 13, and will finish on September 18.
