Bahraini regime forces detain 3 Shia clerics

  • Bahrain’s regime has stepped up its crackdown on dissidents by arresting at least three Shia clerics. The clerics were taking part in a sit-in outside the house of top Bahraini Shia cleric, Sheikh Isa Qassim, in Diraz village before they were apprehended.
  • The Yemeni forces backed by fighters from allied Popular Committees have targeted a military camp in the south of Saudi Arabia with a ballistic missile, killing dozens of its forces. The attack happened in the southern city of Jizan. Reports say the military camp has been totally destroyed.
  • A new report by the United Nations shows that the civilian casualties in Afghanistan have set a record, crossing 1,600 in the first six months of this year. A third of the fatalities are children. The report blames militants for the deaths.
  • Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has once again criticized South Korea for allowing a US missile system on its soil. Wang told his South Korean counterpart Lee Byungse that the move harms the foundation of mutual trust between Beijing and Seoul.
  • People in South Korea continue their protests against the deployment of a US missile system in their country. Residents of the town of Seong-ju, where the THAAD system is to be deployed, expressed their opposition to the move by speeches and performances.
  • In Chile, at least 150,000 protesters have taken to the streets of the capital Santiago and other big cities to show their opposition to the country’s Pension Fund. They say the pension distribution system in the Latin American nation is unfair and beneficial to only a few people.
  • Over 60,000 troops have taken up positions across the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro to protect sports venues and key transport areas ahead of the Olympic Games. The deployment is part of an overall contingent of 85-thousand soldiers, police and other security forces for the 2016 Games.
  • Some 100 refugees, trapped inside Serbia, continue to refuse food to pressure Hungary into opening up its borders. The hunger-striking asylum seekers have reached the city of Horgos on the Serbia-Hungary border after three days of walking. They have also refused accommodation.
