Iran weightlifters win six medals at 2016 IWF Junior World Championships

Iranian weightlifters have won six medals at the 2016 edition of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Junior World Championships in Georgia.

On Friday, Iran’s Alireza Dehghan pocketed three medals, including two silver ones, in the 105-kilogram weight category of the contests in Tbilisi.

The 19-year-old Iranian athlete elevated 171 kilograms to settle for the snatch bronze medal. Spanish contestant Marcos Ruiz I Velasco claimed the silver with the same weight lift. Giorgi Chkheidze from the host country raised 172 kilograms overhead to be awarded the gold medal.

The Iranian athlete finished runner-up in the clean and jerk with 207 kilograms and won the silver. Chkheidze also lifted 207 kilograms to earn the third spot and a bronze medal. Russia’s Nikita Solovev snatched the gold with a lift of 210 kilograms.

Dehghan ended his campaign tied on an aggregate of 378 kilograms to win the silver medal. Chkheidze landed in the first overall slot with 379 kilograms. Solovev occupied the third place with an aggregate of 375 kilograms.

Earlier in the day, Reza Beiralvand participated in the 94-kilogram competitions, and lifted 161 kilograms to claim the snatch bronze medal for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He clinched the bronze medal in the clean and jerk with a lift of 201 kilograms, and received the bronze for an aggregate of 362 kilograms.

The 2016 edition of the IWF Junior World Championships kicked off on June 23 and came to an end on July 2.
