Mexican authorities have found as many as eight mutilated bodies in seven unmarked graves in the central state of Zacatecas, notorious for deadly violence by drug cartels.

The officials said Friday that the bodies were found while police officers were conducting an intelligence operation in the region, saying drug cartels may be behind the killings.

“While authorities were conducting their search, they found bodies that had been mutilated, decapitated and dismembered,” said state Attorney General Leticia Soto Acosta.

The official further explained that at least six bodies were dug out but the number may climb to eight, pending further forensic examinations, the report added.

According to Soto Acosta, the identities of three male victims were already confirmed, including two who were reported missing July 15 of last year and were recognized by tattoos and descriptions provided by family members.

She added, however, that initial forensic analysis suggests some of the victims may have been buried as recent as 10 to 15 days ago, while the advanced decomposition of another corpse indicated that it may have been buried for as long as nine months.

Mexican officials also reported discovery of some document at the scene, including a birth certificate.

The north-central state of Zacatecas, northwest of Mexico City, was long dominated by the violent Zetas drug cartel.

More than 100,000 people have been killed or gone missing in drug-related violence across Mexico since 2006.
