Venezuela police clash with anti-government protesters

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • A bomb blast has rocked Turkey’s southeastern Mardin province, killing three people and wounding over 30 others. The car bomb targeted a police station in the town of Midyat, north of the Syrian border. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has blamed the Kurdistan Workers’ Party for the attack.
     
  • At least 20 civilians have been killed and dozens of others injured in terrorist mortar attacks on the Syrian city of Aleppo. Members of Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham targeted administrative and residential buildings. A few days ago, the Nusra Front fired mortar rounds on Aleppo, killing over 40 civilians.
     
  • Daesh Takfiri terrorists have destroyed several ancient monuments in northern Iraq. A video, purportedly released by the terrorist group, shows the Temple of Nabu near the city of Nimrud being blown up. The footage also shows the destruction of Adad and Mashki Gates and a large portion of Nineveh’s fortified wall.
     
  • The EU foreign policy chief has painted a grim outlook for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Federica Mogherini told a UN Security Council briefing that the prospects for a viable two-state solution are fading away. She also said the possibility of achieving peace is getting beyond reach.
     
  • An analysis by US think-tank, the Pew Research Center, shows over 60 percent of French voters have an unfavorable view of the European Union. The research also reveals that almost half of Germans, Spaniards, and the Dutch people are Euro-skeptic. The skepticism goes up to 71 percent in debt-ridden Greece.
     
  • Clashes have erupted between the Venezuelan police and anti-government protesters in the capital Caracas. Security forces fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators trying to reach the headquarters of Venezuela’s electoral body. The protesters demanded a recall referendum to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro.
     
  • Brazil’s prosecutor general is reportedly seeking the arrest of four senior politicians accused of obstructing a corruption investigation. The men are all from interim President Michel Temer’s PMDB party. They are suspected of being part of a massive embezzlement and bribery network involving Brazil’s state-run oil company Petrobras.
     
  • An Egyptian passenger plane, en route to China, has made an emergency landing in Uzbekistan over a false bomb threat. The EgyptAir jet was evacuated and searched, but no explosives were found. EgyptAir has received number of hoax calls since one of its aircraft crashed into the Mediterranean in May.
