Iran men’s national compound team has displayed its superiority at Shanghai 2016 Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 1 in China, and managed to win the title of the prestigious sports event.
Iran’s Esmaeil Ebadi, Omid Taheri and Majid Gheidi recorded impressive performance in the final match of the compound section on Saturday and clinched the victory.
The Iranian trio made a sound start and shot 59 in the first six arrows of the gold medal match.
The American contingent of Steve Anderson, Alex Wifler and Reo Wilde were not so on point, as Persians surged ahead.
The US trio traded away another point advantage in the second end, but could claim it back in the third.
Iranian archers posted four points at the start of the final regulation end, and Americans were seeking to narrow the deficit, when Ebadi recorded a seven-point shot and sprang into action.
Omid Taheri and Gheidi added 10 points each, and Ebadi delivered what was needed. and put in nine points and sealed a 229-228 win for Iran.
“There was some wind and in the arena it might have blown me off a little bit,” Ebadi said.
“This isn’t the first time we have taken gold. But it is the first time we have beaten the USA. That’s a big achievement,” Gheidi said.
“We want to stay on top for a long time. We have a great relationship, the three of us, and it’s a team that thinks it can win, all the time, every time,” Taheri pointed out.
Iranian Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Mahmoud Goudarzi congratulated the national Iranian compound squad on the victory.
Shanghai 2016 Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 1 started in China on April 26 amd will conclude on May 1.
