At least six people have lost their lives and nearly two dozen others sustained injuries when a bomber detonated his explosives-ladenvehicle in Afghanistan’s central-eastern province of Parwan.
Sayed Sediqqi, governor of Seya Gerd district in the province, situated about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of the capital, Kabul, said the incident took place at about 9.30 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) on Tuesday.
“We had been tipped off he was coming, he intended to target a police base, but when he found himself being chased by police, he detonated himself in an area close to a school and clinic,” provincial police chief Mohammad Zaman Mamozai said.
“Six civilians have been killed and another 22 injured. There is only one policeman among the wounded,” he added.
Waheed Sediqqi, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said the death toll could rise as some of the injured are in critical condition.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the Taliban are increasingly active in the remote mountainous area.
Afghanistan is gripped by insecurity 15 years after the United States and its allies attacked the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.
The war removed the Taliban from power but insecurity is still rampant in the country despite the presence of thousands of foreign troops.
