Syrian Kurds effective force fighting Daesh: Commentator

Press TV has interviewed Sukant Chandan, a political commentator in London, to discuss the participation of Kurds in the next round of Syria peace talks.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: How important is the involvement of Syrian Kurds in any peace process?

Chandan: The importance of the PYD (the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party) in these negotiations is this; the PYD has been a very effective fighting force against Daesh and the other NATO’s unleashed supremacist death squads in northern Syria or south Kurdistan depending on how you consider that region.

Also considering Turkey’s junior but also leading regional role in NATO’s project of destruction of Libya and now Syria it is very important that those pushing back against that NATO project include this Kurdish group. This Kurdish group by the way is very close to link to the Kurdish Worker’s Party, the PKK, which is no stranger to the Damascus government. Indeed it was the Damascus government in the early 80s which facilitated the emergence, the training, the arming and the safe havens of the PKK in Syria and of the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon as well. So these are some of the important facets to including this group in the negotiations.

Press TV: And obviously the big obstacle is Turkey which obviously stands opposed to Syrian Kurds or even its own Kurds. How do you feel about how that can be ever overcome?

Chandan: Well Erdogan and the AKP regime in Ankara in Turkey are going absolutely out of their minds. Like typical fascists they are in greater crisis and as they are going into greater crisis they lash out in a more violent manner. So really Erdogan is really on a knife-edge … at the moment and the more he loses his mind the more likely is that there might be the prospect as there was before in 1980 in Turkey of a military takeover against Erdogan to shift Turkey away from this trajectory of total suicide at the moment.

Press TV: I am wondering, do you think that there will come a point where the Kurds will be involved in these conversations?

Chandan: There is no doubt that the Kurds will be involved. Turkey will go kicking and screaming to the negotiating table with its Kurdish counterparts but it must do so. This is the end game now in Syria. The Syrian war has been won and this is just the formal process in facilitating that victory.
