Palestinian president urges int’l support against Israeli violations

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has accused Israel of blatantly violating international human rights law and called for international support against the growing Israeli violations across the Palestinian territories.

Abbas made the remarks during the 5th Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Palestinian issues in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta on Monday.

The Palestinian president also criticized the Israeli regime for its continued settlement expansion as well as attempts to Judaize al-Quds (Jerusalem).

He said the danger of the Judaization of al-Quds is increasing due to the successive Israeli violations.

At the summit’s last day, Indonesian President Joko Widodo also said international patience has long run out over Israel’s policies in the occupied territories, and urged Tel Aviv to immediately stop its illegal activities and policies in Palestine.

“As part of the international community, Israel must end its illegal activities and policies in the occupied territories. Indonesia and the Islamic world stand ready to take concrete actions to urge Israel to end its colonialization to Palestine,” Widodo said in his opening remarks at the plenary.

The OIC are holding the summit at the request of Abbas to discuss the Israeli escalation and its restriction on Palestinians’ access to the al-Aqsa Mosque. The occupied Palestinian territories have been the scene of heightened tensions triggered by Israel’s imposition in August 2015 of restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the mosque compound in East al-Quds.

Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site in Islam after Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina.

The restrictions have enraged Palestinians, who are also angry at increasing violence by Israeli settlers frequently storming the al-Aqsa Mosque. The Palestinians say the Tel Aviv regime seeks to change the status quo of the compound.

More than 192 Palestinians, including children and women, have lost their lives at the hands of Israeli forces in the tensions since the beginning of last October.
