Iran will continue backing Syria’s anti-terror bids: VP

Iran's First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri (R) and Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halaqi

Iran's First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri says the Islamic Republic will continue to support the Syrian people and government in their fight against terrorism.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has not thought twice about its determination and will to support the resistance of the Syrian people and government in the fight against terrorist groups and under current difficult circumstances Iran will support Syria as much as it can,” Jahangiri said in a telephone conversation with Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halaqi on Tuesday.

He commended recent gains by Syrian armed forces and allied volunteer fighters in the north of the country in purging militants from areas across the province of Aleppo.

Syria has been recording back-to-back victories in its battle against militants in Aleppo, especially since pro-government forces managed to break the siege on two key villages near the Turkish border, namely Nobbul and Zahra, less than two weeks ago.

Since 2011, Syria has been gripped by a militancy it blames on some foreign governments. The conflict has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 470,000 people.

Jahangiri also said, “Putting an end to the Syrian crisis has definitely a Syrian-Syrian solution and a political approach and political negotiations are the only solutions to the Syrian crisis.”

“Only the Syrian people are entitled to make a decision about their country’s fate and future, and interference by foreign powers will worsen the situation,” the Iranian official said.

He added that terrorism has turned into the “biggest challenge and problem” for the entire world and called for collective international determination to fight terrorists.

The Syrian premier, for his part, thanked Iran’s economic and military assistance for Syria’s campaign against terrorism.

Halaqi expressed hope he would pay a visit to Iran as soon as possible to discuss ways to further expand Tehran-Damascus relations.
