Two Iranian climbers have put on awe-inspiring performances at the 2016 Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme (UIAA) Ice Climbing World Cup & Asian Championships in South Korea, and finished as Asia’s vice-champions in the high-status sporting event.
On Sunday and the final day of the competitions in Cheongsong County, Zaynab Kobra Mousavi participated in the women’s speed record category competitions, and landed in the second position of the Asian chart.
She also claimed the eighth position in the world rankings.
Speed climbing is a race in its purest form. Two contestants face each other while moving up the ice in this disciple, and the fastest climber wins.
Lead climbing, on the other hand, emphasizes on strength and techniques. Climbers go up the ice alone and try to reach a specific end point within an amount of time given to them.
To practice the sport at the highest level competition, it takes athletes with strategic insight, power, precision and full commitment.
Later in the day, Mohammad Reza Safdariyan picked up another Asia silver medal for the Islamic Republic of Iran. He vied for the top honor in the men’s lead discipline, and finished runner-up in the continental events.
The Iranian sportsman occupied the seventh spot in the world as well.
The 2016 UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup & Asian Championships began in Cheongsong County, South Korea, on January 15, and finished on January 17.
