Donald Trump, the leading US presidential candidate for the Republican Party, has lashed out against a Saudi prince who called him a “disgrace” to America and asked the New York billionaire to drop out of the race.
“Withdraw from the US presidential race as you will never win," Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal demanded of Trump in a Tweet on Friday. "You are a disgrace not only to the GOP, but to all America.”
The prince’s remarks came after Trump on Monday called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on."
Later on Friday, the Republican front-runner said bin Talal was a “dopey” prince and accused him of attempting to buy US politicians.
“Dopey Prince @Alwaleed_Talal wants to control our US politicians with daddy’s money. Can’t do it when I get elected,” he tweeted.
The Saudi prince is the CEO of Kingdom Holding Company, which has stakes in Citigroup and Twitter, with an estimated net worth of $24.8 billion, according to Forbes.
In 1999, he told The Economist that he set up his business with a $30,000 loan he received from his father and by mortgaging a house his father had given him for $400,000.
Trump also is the son of a wealthy real estate developer and has received a “small” $1 million loan from his father following his graduation from college in 1968.
According to Forbes, Trump’s net worth is valued at $4.5 billion.
