The Russian Defense Ministry says Moscow has deployed attack and transport helicopters to a base in Armenia.
Russia’s RIA news agency on Tuesday cited the Russian Defense Ministry as saying that Moscow had sent seven Mi-24 and Mi-8 helicopters to its base near the Armenian capital, Yerevan.
The ministry was also quoted as saying that another deployment was expected to be made to the base – which was set up in 1995 – before the end of the current year.
Moscow also has a military base in Armenia’s northwestern city of Gyumri, located near the country’s border with Turkey.
Meanwhile, a Russian submarine has also neared the Syrian coast in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, Interfax news agency says.
Interfax quoted an unnamed source as saying that the submarine was equipped with missiles similar to those used by Russian warships fighting Daesh terrorists in Syria.
The developments come amid a rise in tensions between Moscow and Ankara, triggered by Turkey’s November 24 downing of a Russian Su-24M jet in Syria.
