A storm in the US state of Washington has left three people dead and thousands of citizens without power.

On Wednesday, some 250,000 homes and businesses were left without power in the northwestern state, Reuters reported.

The storm that hit the region uprooted trees and brought about mudslides.

Winds up to 113 kilometers per hour (70 mph) blew in the Spokane area of eastern Washington, where schools remained closed.

Several highways were also said to have been closed by fallen trees, mudslides and floods in the region hit by storm.

‘Hell of a mess’

Three people have so far been confirmed dead.

One of the victims was a motorist who died in Monroe, a city in Snohomish County, according to Merlin Halverson, the country’s fire chief.

Debris from a fallen tree is pictured during a strong storm in Seattle, Washington November 17, 2015.

"Many roads are closed from downed trees, active power lines, flood waters," Halverson said. "It's a hell of a mess here."

The two other victims were both women killed by falling trees one in Spokane and the other on State Route 904 southwest of the city, where a tree struck a car.

Severe flooding was reported on the Snoqualmie River in King County.

Scattered showers and some sunshine were due to return to the Seattle-area on Wednesday.
