Russian police have arrested the director of a Ukrainian literature library in Moscow on charges of distributing banned books containing anti-Russia propaganda.
According to the Russian Investigative Committee on Thursday, Natalya Sharina was charged with inciting ethnic hatred and violating human dignity by distributing books by radical nationalist Ukrainian author Dmytro Korchynsky, whose works are banned in Russia.
The police also searched the homes of Sharina and another Ukrainian whose organization has worked with the library.
Sharina's deputy Vitaly Krikunenko said the library did not stock Korchynsky's books, adding, "Our library does not offer publications which could incite ethnic strife."
The Ukrainian foreign ministry called on the Russian authorities to "halt pressure on the work of the library."
The Library of Ukrainian Literature was established by Russian government to promote Ukrainian literature. It has had more than 6,900 patrons since July 2013. It stocks titles in Russian and Ukrainian, and receives funding from the Moscow city budget.
Moscow-Kiev relations have been strained since Ukraine’s Black Sea peninsula of Crimea rejoined the Russian Federation following a referendum in March 2014.
