Iranian taekwondo practitioner Omid Amidi has scooped up a silver medal at Kazakhstan Open Taekwondo Championships 2015 - WTF G1.
On Wednesday, the 23-year-old Iranian sportsman downed Askar Baimolda, an opponent from the host nation, 16-2 in his first competition of the men’s minus 87-kilogram weight class at the Baluan Sholak Sports Palace in the city of Almaty.
Amidi overpowered French rival M'Bar N'Diaye 13-7 in his second contest, and earned the ticket for the final showdown.
The young Iranian athlete, who he had already sustained painful injuries in his march to the final, then decided not to show up for the contest against Uzbek taekwondo practitioner Jasur Baykuziyev, and finished as vice-champion.
The Kazakhstan Open Taekwondo Championships 2015 - WTF G1 opened in Almaty on October 25, and finished on October 28.
The tournament brought together some 369 competitors from 31 countries, including China, Egypt, Germany, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, South Korea, the United States and Uzbekistan.
Armin Hadipour Seighalani, Mohammad Kazemi Foshazadeh, Behnam Asbaghi Khanghah, Farzad Zolghadri and Omid Amidi represented the Islamic Republic of Iran at the sporting event.
On October 26, 20-year-old Hadipour Seighalani snatched the gold medal in the men’s minus 54-kilogram weight division after he managed to defeat Uzbek opponent Valentin Khegay 12-7 in the final encounter of the category.
Gold medalists added 10 points to their qualification rankings for the 32nd edition of Olympic Games scheduled to be staged between August 5 and August 21, 2016 in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, with 789 athletes participating in the sporting event.
Silver and bronze medalists at Kazakhstan taekwondo tournament also added 6 and 3.6 points respectively to their 2016 Summer Olympics qualification rankings.
