Lebanon soldiers injured in mortar attack in Ras Baalbek
A mortar round has hit a Lebanese army base close to the Syrian border, leaving five soldiers injured, a military source says.
The source, whose name was not released, told AFP that the soldiers “were wounded after a mortar shell landed inside their base” in Lebanon’s northeastern village of Ras Baalbek on Wednesday.
The source blamed the incident on “terrorist groups,” adding, “There are no clashes but we are responding now.”
In January, five Lebanese soldiers were killed in an attack on a military post in the same border village by about 200 gunmen coming from Syria’s strategic Qalamoun region.
Terrorists affiliated with the al-Nusra Front and the Takfiri Daesh militant group briefly overran Lebanon’s border town of Arsal in August last year.
However, the Takfiri elements later withdrew from the area under their control, but took with them several dozen hostages from the Lebanese army and police, four of whom have since been executed.
Lebanon is suffering from the spillover of militancy in neighboring Syria, where foreign-backed Takfiri terrorists are fighting the government forces.
The foreign-sponsored conflict in Syria, which started in March 2011, has claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people and left over one million injured.
