The United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has set a new record in finding firearms passengers intended to carry on airplanes during one week this month.
According to the administration, airport security agents discovered 67 guns in passenger’s luggage during the week ended September 17. Of the 67 guns, 56 were loaded and 26 had a round in the chamber.
The previous record was 65 firearms that security agents discovered during a week in May 2013, TSA said.
The administration said the agents also found 64 guns in carry-on bags at airports, for the most recent week in September 24. Of those, 55 were loaded and 22 had a round chambered.
Early in June, a report revealed that undercover agents managed to smuggle firearms and mock explosives through 95 percent of the American airport checkpoints.
An undercover agent was stopped right after he set off an alarm at a checkpoint in one test. TSA screeners then patted him down, but could not find a fake explosive device, which was taped to his back. In the wake of the revelation, Melvin Carraway, acting administrator for TSA was ousted.
In July, new TSA Administrator Peter Neffenger told a congressional panel that his top priority would be to close security gaps at airport checkpoints.
TSA officers, however, have found more than 2,000 guns at airport security checkpoints so far this year.
On Thursday, TSA agents detected a gun in a passenger’s carry-on bag at a Greater Rochester International Airport checkpoint in New York. A day earlier, TSA agents found another loaded gun in a passenger's carry-on bag at the Des Moines International Airport in Iowa.
